Commissioned by Whitehall House in Cheam this is a song which explores families. How do we grow into our family? Who dow e meet? What is family? Will we journey away form our family? This song is sung from the point of view of Thomas Killick, a young boy living at Whitehall House in Victorian times.
lyrics
Family Tree
Bury deep and watch it grow;
any seed you carefully sow,
with the rain and with the sun
green shoots will appear.
I've known this place since I was small,
and like the garden I'll grow tall,
my heart can journey while my roots remain here
Family tree, I'm the future history, of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history, of your family tree
My parents came to Whitehall
to put down roots and raise us all
and father's said that one day, Whitehall will be mine
And if I can tend the garden so,
just like him, I'll make things grow,
work hard and make a living, that will be just fine
Family tree, I'm the future history, of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history, of your family tree
Honey suckle on the breeze
I tell my news to the bees,
I have three brothers now
they know about each one.
Another year, another birth
we push our feet down through the earth
the daisies turn their heads as they follow the sun
Family tree, I'm the future history, of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history, of your family tree
I feel I'll stay here all my life
work a living, love a wife
I think I'll be happy, there's no place I need to go
But last night I dreamed I went away;
an ocean journey night and day,
saw the face of a stranger I seemed to know
Family tree, I'm the future history, of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history, of your family tree
