about

Dedicated to my mum, Elaine Lockyer, on her birthday, I've written this song as part of the Family Tree song series, which accompanies the Stories in Gardens event.
This version is for the beautiful walled garden of Park Hill Park in Croydon, south London.
This almost secret garden is managed and cared for almost enitrely by the Friends of Park Hill Park, a group of extremely dedicated and hard working volunteers who love the garden and take great pride in making it a beautiful and welcoming space for everybody.
Its heritage includes being very near the home of Cecily Mary Barker, author of the Flower Fairies children's books full of beautiful illustrations and poems about the tiny guardians of the plants and flowers of the garden.

lyrics

Family Tree

Bury deep and watch it grow, any seed you carefully sow,
With the rain and with the sun, green shoots will appear
I've known this place since I was small, and like the garden I'll grow tall
My heart can journey while my roots remain here

Family tree, I'm the future history of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history of your family tree

Blackbird, Finch and Robin song, the birds have been here all along
In this secret garden, not far from the town
And as we tend the garden so, working hard to make things grow
We listen to its secrets as they're handed down

Family tree, I'm the future history of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history of your family tree

Honeysuckle on the breeze, I tell my news to the bees
I have three brothers now and they know about each one
Another year, another birth, we push our feet down through the earth,
the Daisies turn their heads as they follow the sun

Family tree, I'm the future history of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history of your family tree

Flower Fairies dance and play, tending flowers night and day
in and out the garden breathes as seasons come and go
Through quiet thoughts or conversation, convalescence, celebration
In the end it is a friend we come to know

Family tree, I'm the future history of my family tree
Family tree, you're the future history of your family tree
